Annual leave 帶薪年假 (=paid vacation)
Useful phrases
I want to take annual leave.
My possible dates are from May 10 through[1] May 15
The dates I’m looking at (or considering) are Oct 10 through maybe Oct 31….?
I’d like to ask for leave starting…(Oct 10 through Oct 15)
I’m taking annual leave next week.
Jessie asked for leave for two days and the manager just granted her leave.
Scenario
You: Sir, um, I would like to ask for leave starting next Monday through Wednesday.
The BOSS: Well, good for you. Who’s covering for you while you’re gone?
You: Cindy will be my substitute.
The BOSS: Okay. You need to fill out a leave request form by the end of today[2].
Example – Auto-reply when you’re away from the office
Thanks for your email.
I will be out of the office from mm/dd to mm/dd.
If you have any questions, please contact Cindy at Cindy@somewhere.com.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
I am currently OoO[3] with limited access to email.

Sick leave病假
Useful phrases
I don’t feel well. I think I’m going to call in sick. (打電話請假)
I am calling/writing to let you know that I need to take one day (or today) off.
Unfortunately, I got the flu / I got a very bad cold.
Scenario
Teacher: Is Cindy not in today?
You: She called in sick this morning.
You: She is taking sick leave. / She is taking a day off.
Exercise – describe your discomforts
I caught a cold / the flu (influenza).
I am feeling sick / ill.
I have been coughing / sneezing.
I have a headache
I have a runny nose and a sore throat.
I have a stuffy nose.
I have a fever/ have a temperature.
I have diarrhea.
I’m feeling a little dizzy. 頭暈
I’m feeling a little nauseated. 噁心
I feel like I’m gonna vomit / puke / throw up. 想吐
My stomach / belly / tummy is not feeling so well.
I’ve been having severe chest pain.
I had food poisoning from that undercooked chicken I ate on vacation.
Personal leave事假
Useful phrases
I was on leave for two days for personal reasons.
I had two personal days off.
Scenario
BOSS: What can I do for you Jason?
Jason: I need to request some time off.
BOSS: Is everything OK? I hope that it’s not a family emergency.
Jason: No, it’s nothing like that. In fact, it’s good news. I’m getting married.
BOSS: If I recall correctly, you’ve already used up all of your vacation time for this year, though.
Jason: I know, I’ll have to take these days as unpaid leave.
Jason: I wanted to give you advance notice and get your permission beforehand.
BOSS: Well, I don’t think this will be a problem.
BOSS: Fill out the necessary paperwork, and I’ll sign it when it’s ready.

British English: “I work from Monday to Friday”
American English: “I work from Monday through Friday”
